Greg Stephens, Barrister & Solicitor is a former songwriter and professional
musician who was signed to a Canadian independent record company, then with a
major multinational in the 1980's. He wrote, sang and performed on albums with
several well-known pop groups as well as doing some session work. Greg spent
time recording in Toronto and Los Angeles and toured extensively. He also attended
Arts' Sake school where he studied painting and art history.
Greg studied Arts and Sciences at the University of Victoria and the University
of Toronto, and then Commerce at the University of Toronto where he received
a Certificate In Business. He then studied Law at the University of Toronto where
he received the degree of Juris Doctor.
Greg articled at the international law firm of Goodman, Phillips & Vineberg
(now Goodmans), focussing in its large entertainment law section as well as undertaking
corporate and commercial work. Upon completion of articles, Greg immediately
went into private practice as a sole practitioner.
Greg's practice consists primarily of arts and entertainment law, and he has
broad experience in music, film, television, animation, internet and new media
matters. Intellectual property protection (trade-mark and copyright), book publishing,
fine arts issues and copyright for architects are other areas of interest and
experience. Corporate - commercial work for creative clients rounds out the practice.
He is a frequent panellist and speaker at workshops and music industry conferences such as North-By-Northeast and Canada Music Week and frequently attends the annual international MIDEM conference in Cannes, France. Greg has recently been elected a director and is vice-president of the Songwriters Association of Canada (SAC) and is a founding member of the Canadian Independent Recording Artists Association (CIRRA). Additionally, in 2009 Greg will be a part-time professor of Entertainment Law at the Music Business Administration / Management Program at Durham College. |
